Promoting Inclusion and Disability Awareness in Schools

Primary school pupils from St. Conleth's College in Dublin took part in a Disability Awareness Session hosted by a team of service users and staff from our Dublin Adult Services. The children were shown videos of the team (all of whom are power-chair users) playing para-soccer for Ireland, skydiving, doing martial arts, and sailing a tall ship. They learned that just because someone is in a wheelchair doesn’t mean they can’t have fun and do what they love!

The team then set up demonstrations for the children in different activities like para-soccer, Boccia, and power chair/wheelchair mobility lessons. The aim of the session was to promote inclusion and increase awareness by giving the pupils a chance to experience what it is like to live with a disability. The session was filmed by RTE's News2Day team, who produce news for children, and the piece was aired on RTE2.
