On December 3rd, you can help turn Ireland purple and join the annual worldwide celebration to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This year the theme is Leadership and Participation

International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2021

The theme of this year’s International Day of People with Disabilities is “Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world,” and we are highlighting the leaders and participators among our own community of Service Owners.  

Meet Valerie Whelan - Val works as a receptionist in Enable Ireland in Dun Laoghaire and as a Support Worker in the Virtual Adult Service. She has also served on the board of Enable Ireland and ACTS Community Transport for a number of years. In her own words, Val says she likes to support people and that it is important for people with disabilities to get involved with other groups. Watch Val's story here. 

Meet Padhraic Dormer – Padhraic is a brother, a son, a Service Owner and a paid Support Worker with Enable Ireland’s Virtual Service for Adults. He is also a thrill seeker, a Boccia player and very involved in his local community. Most importantly he is a Man Utd fan dreaming of past glories and better days ahead :) Watch Padhraic’s story here.

Meet Karl Grey – Karl attends Enable Ireland in Sandyford and is on the allotment Committee where he is in charge of implementing new ideas on Enable Ireland’s allotment in Shanganagh Community Gardens. Karl is also a member of Spina Bifida Association where he goes out and meets other members in the community. Watch Karl's story here.

Meet representatives from Enable Ireland’s Service Owners Council – Trevor Kennedy is Chairperson of the Council. Diarmuid Duggan, Trevor Kennedy, Padhraic Dormer, Enda Gallagher and David O’Reilly are all local representatives on the Council bringing local issues to the group and bringing them to national attention. They value the opportunity to raise and discuss issues impacting the lives of people with disabilities with their colleagues on the council. Watch their story here.

Meet Rory Conway – Rory attends Enable Ireland in Rialto and during lockdown Rory and his Dad shared lots of songs and music on social media. Rory has performed in lots of different locations in his community and made thousands of people happy with his music. Watch Rory's story here.

Meet Pat Gregg – Pat enjoys going on respite in Rathmore House, shopping and meeting his friends for pints in his local. But he assures us he had nothing to do with the trouble in Irishtown last weekend! Watch Pat's story here. 
 
Meet Scott Kellet – Scott hangs out at the ‘Men’s Shed’ in Crumlin where he enjoys woodwork and having a cup of tea and a chat with the lads. Watch Scott's story here. 

Meet Mary Gaul – Mary completed a sponsored walk last year and she likes to go out into her community to go shopping and chat to people. Watch Mary's story here. 

Meet Claire Pringle – Claire has worked as a receptions in Enable Ireland and she now working on the virtual service where she helps staff and support workers with technical issues they may have. She facilitates classes on the virtual service and loves to loves to make up virtual games like music bingo for people to take part in. It sounds like a lot of fun! Claire is a member of Ataxia Ireland and she enjoys their online martial arts classes. Watch Claire's story here.
