Switches

Switches enable an individual who has reliable control of one or more movements to control various electronic devices which are equipped with an appropriate switch interface and software.

They can be used to replace a keyboard and/or mouse on a computer so that full control is possible with switches.

When control of the electronic device is complex, switches maybe used via a menu that scans so that the user can select a specific item within the menu. There are a number of different ways in which the scanning menu can be controlled. For example, the user may depress the switch repetitively until the target item is highlighted on screen. Alternatively he/she may use the switch to activate an automatic scanning function, with a further switch selection at the moment when the target item is highlighted on screen.

Careful switch selection and switch location are essential if the user is to make optimal use of his/her switch or switches.
