A person’s ability to live independently can be enhanced through the use of a wide range of Environmental Control devices. These devices provide easy, independent means of operating various appliances and devices located in the home, office and classroom. In essence they enhance a person’s ability to live with optimal independence.
Environmental control devices can range from a simple remote control to operate a TV, video player, or light, to electronic door and window openers, as well as more sophisticated, systems which can control telephones and room temperature.
Terry uses an IRIS or infrared system which he controls with his chin switches. He uses the IRIS to control his television, operate his video, make telephone calls and operate his electronic page turner. Basically all of today's TV and VCR remote controls are operated using infrared signals but instead of using a remote Terry uses his chin switch. By using the switch he sends a signal to the IRIS, which in turn sends an infrared signal to the appliance.
Terry has been using the IRIS for a year now and he is constantly expanding the range of tasks it can undertake.
