Enable Ireland Mayo Children's Services
Services Overview
Children and young adults and their families can access the following services:
- Physiotherapy assessment and intervention.
- Social work.
- Assistive Technology assessment and training.
- Children's Personal Assistant service.
- Transport.
- Summer activities.
- Hydrotherapy.
- Services are community based, provided in community facilities and in the children's own homes.
- Outreach Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy services are currently available in three locations in the county; Swinford, Ballina and Bangor-Erris. The service is supported by a comprehensive transport service to and from the three service locations. This minimises the need for families to travel long distances in order to avail of the service.
Community Employment
Mayo's outreach programme brings services to people in their own communities. The therapy and social work services are supported by Community Employment (CE) participants in service delivery. The CE scheme is managed by a full time supervisor and assistant supervisor. The job roles of the participants include drivers, pre-school assistants, children's PA's, transport, escorts, assistants to the physiotherapy programme and clerical support. In addition some participants work as retail assistants in the Enable Ireland shop in Castlebar.
The service has expanded over the years and now includes:
- Swimming - Participants assist children in hydrotherapy sessions
- Escort - Providing supervision and care of service users while travelling
- Classroom Assistants - Assisting children with disabilities in pre-school settings
- Children's PA - Assisting the child and family with day to day activities in the home
- Summer Activities - Provision of leisure activity programmes for children in the summer months
- Transport - Adapted vehicles provide transport to and from the physiotherapy outreach service in Ballina, Swinford and Belmullet.
Assistive Technology (AT)
AT is any item, piece of equipment or product system whether acquired commercially or off the shelf, modified or customised that is used to increase or improve functional capabilities of individuals with a disability.
Regional service provided in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon provides assessment and training for children and adults with physical and sensory disabilities in relation to technology for:
- Mobility.
- Communication.
- Education.
- Written communication.
- Environmental Controls.
Services are person and family centred and are provided on an outreach basis to people in their own communities. The fully equipped mobile unit visits people in their own locations.
The AT service team currently consists of:
