Secondary School

Among his favourite subjects are computers and cookery but nothing holds a candle to hurling for Conor. He absolutely adores it. Hurling’s a sport that’s particularly suitable for someone in a wheelchair. It’s great for him to feel involved in something like that and he was delighted when he was picked for the team. Now the team go to play matches at other schools and it’s a great social outlet for him.

When children enter secondary school, they have commenced their teenage years. These are the years when young people develop the specific skills required for their transition to an adult world. This is a time when they will go through many changes and take on new responsibilities.

Working in partnership with young people, Enable Ireland has unique experience and expertise in facilitating the development of independence, social and self-advocacy skills. Each individual young person will have their own goals and vision for the future and this will determine the skills needed.

Even if the young person will not achieve full independence, they will move into an adult world of programmes and services.

We actively support the transition to adult education, training, employment and social opportunity. We are committed to ensuring that all young people and their families receive the support they need for making the transition to an adult world.

The programmes that we have in place to meet this commitment may vary from service to service but all have the same goal of shifting the responsibilities from the service provider and family to the young person, as developmentally appropriate.
