WHEELS Training Programme
Enable Ireland Dublin Adult Services is accredited to deliver Level One Rehabilitative Training. The "Wheels" training programme aims to offer people with a primary physical disability the opportunity to develop a broad range of skills. These skills are aimed at increasing independence and self-advocacy, whilst facilitating greater involvement and inclusion within the community. The programme takes into account fully the needs and abilities of the service user and offers them the opportunity to design and modify programmes accordingly through the person centred planning process.
At the end of the programme it is anticipated that service users will have significantly more knowledge of their local communities and the services available to them within a mainstream setting. Greater independent living skills, i.e. using transport, community access and self-advocacy, are also among the outcome aims. With the help of a supported employment co-ordinator they will have the opportunity to access supported employment as well as further education or training.
Modules fall into the following categories:
- Personal Development including personal & interpersonal skills, disability awareness, relationships and sexuality.
- Literacy & Numeracy modules, delivered in partnerships with NALA in a mainstream setting in Crumlin College of Further Education. Is this still correct? Taken out in update.
- Information Technology covering introduction to computers, Microsoft Office software, access to the internet and desktop publishing.
- Office Skills including reception, telephone skills, customer care, photocopying.
- The Arts/Culture including art, drama and music, both centre and community based, digital art and photography.
- Leisure Pursuits including art, drama and music, swimming, boccia and gym training. Both centre and community based.
Accreditation is through the Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC)
Independent Living Training
Independent Living training is being developed for those people looking at alternatives in their lives. We strive to provide resources to ensure that the Rathmore Holiday House and the Evening Social Programme are structured and utilised to promote independence.
Training Approach
The training approach is designed to give the service user the opportunity to make informed and realistic choices. Each service user is encouraged to maximise their potential while progressing at a level which suits their needs. This person-centres approach is designed to:
- encourage empowerment;
- encourage recognition of key strengths and interests;
- encourage choice in the training options;
- develop and encourage links with the community; and
- incorporate evaluation, feedback and review, which directs future training programmes.
