School Leavers Club
The concept of the School Leavers Club originates from working groups, made up of staff, parents and service users, who identified a significant gap in the provision of services for school leaving students making the transition from school to an adult service and beyond.
The programme is co-ordinated by Dublin Adult Services in close partnershop with the Enable Ireland School and Children’s Services in Sandymount, Dublin 4. It is a programme designed to address the many issues concerning students aged between 16 and 18 years as they move from school to adulthood. The objectives of the club are to:
- Conduct activities that are interesting and fun for all
- Provide students with information and awareness regarding post-school options
- Encourage students to focus on their abilities and interests rather than be hindered by their disability
- Encourage students to seek ways around barriers they may face rather be discouraged by them
- Assist students with making informed choices about their futureneeds after school
- Assist students with developing their social and interpersonal skills
- Work in partnership with the student, parents/guardians and schoolteam
- Provide the student with opportunity to share any concerns they may have about entering adulthood.
There are also sessions for parents and guardians that take into account their concerns and views. They are encouraged to take an active role in their child’s post-school options. Sessions include disability equality training, presentations of supports available at Enable Ireland, including an introduction to high tech assistive technology, as well as information resources on post-school options.
