Respite and Evening Social Programmes

Rathmore House

Dublin Adult Service users regularly participate in short holiday breaks to Rathmore House close to the amenities of Arklow, Courtown and Gorey, and are also facilitated in arranging social evening outings of their choice.

Rathmore House is situated in the beautiful and idyllic countryside of Coolroe Great, County Wicklow, providing holidays (respite) for adult service users. It was bought in 2001 with funding from the Health Board and has been extensively renovated to make it fully accessible for people with physical disabilities.

Whilst at Rathmore House, service users choose how they would like to spend their time. There are a range of in-house activities on offer, including beauty treatments, yoga, aroma therapy, reflexology and cookery lessons. Transport is available at all times so there are regular trips to the local cinema, shopping centre, bowling centre, restaurants and pubs.

The house staff are available to assist service users in all areas of daily living. Visitors are encouraged to be as independent as possible and for those interested in developing their skills in this area, independent living training is available.

Assistive technology plays a big part in improving independent living. For this reason the kitchen is completely assistive technology friendly; the oven, hob and counter tops are height adjustable. All delph is stored in carousel units and there is also movable storage to assist accessibility. In the bedroom controls are installed so that service users can open and close windows, turn lights on and off and close the door, all from a click of a switch.

From time to time Rathmore House is also available as a rental property. At present it is rented to service users and their families, Enable Ireland services nationwide and other disability organisations.

Rathmore House hopes in the future to extend the duration of the breaks taking place, while all the time keeping its uniqueness of offering holiday breaks that are tailor made for the individual service user.
